After an injury-interrupted start to 2009, Nick Smith is back in the hunt for a spot in the Seniors team.

Smith, who played his first full game of the season for the Sydney Swans Reserves last weekend, has recovered from a stress fracture and is ready to make his mark on the 2009 season.

The midfielder has been one of the Reserves’ best players since returning from injury, and his full game last weekend was a promising sign.

The 20-year old played two senior games in 2008 against league heavyweights Geelong and Hawthorn, which has given him extra motivation to get back into the side.

“It was really good, I’m just hoping to really get back up there again soon.” He said.

Smith was drafted from the Oakleigh Chargers in the 2007 rookie draft, and is enjoying his new home.

“Initially it was a bit daunting, but I’ve grown to love it now, and I’m really enjoying my time here now.”

In his third year at the Swans, Smith is happy with his progress, and he hopes that he can continue this good form in 2009.

“I’ve definitely improved a lot in all facets of the game.

“To play a few games in the seniors and hopefully consolidate a spot there, that would be my main goal.” Smith said.

And regardless of where the 2009 season takes him, he knows how fortunate he is.

“I’m definitely lucky to be doing it…it’s a really good club to be a part of. It’s professional and well run and the players are all good people, so it’s a big honour to be able to play for them.” He said.

Smith has been in great form for the Reserves since his return, with 27 disposals and two goals last round, as well as four goals the week before.

While the Reserves defeated Queanbeyan last weekend, Smith knows that there are still elements of their game that need improvement.

“It was ok. We started well, but over the rest of the game we dropped away a bit, our top up players played really well.”

The Swans Reserves now take on Belconnen Magpies on Sunday in their round six clash at Manuka Oval.

And they’ll have to put in an improved performance after losing by to the Magpies by 45-points in round one this year.

While Smith admits that the side’s form has been up and down this season, he still has full faith in his team.

“I think we’ve been a bit inconsistent, but hopefully we can find that consistency, and that will make us a better side.”
