Each day, nearly one in every 200 Australians is homeless, without safe, secure or affordable housing.  In 2010, 105, 000 Australians experienced homelessness.  Here’s how Richmond is doing its bit to help those in need . . .

Throughout the year, Richmond players give up their time to support underprivileged people.  Give this is Homelessness Week, we are proud to recognise some of the Tigers’ work in the Community.

For more than five years, the Club’s players and staff have been volunteering at St Marys House of Welcome, which is a day centre that provides free meals, recreational activities, emergency relief, social work services and a sense of community for people in need.

This week, Tiger trio Jake Batchelor, Brad Helbig and Dean McDonald will put on their aprons to serve breakfast at St Mary’s.

Richmond’s captain, Chris Newman, and midfielder Shane Edwards, attended a local match between the newly-named Youth Projects Living Room Roar and the Sacred Heart Saints.  Newman and Edwards will be presenting the players with their new Richmond jumpers as part of the Tigers’ support for the team.

The Living Room Roar compete in the Reclink football competition, which is run for homeless and disadvantaged people throughout Melbourne.

Youth Projects Living Room is a free health clinic for individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, with complex healthcare needs.

“Football is a great way to connect with disengaged people in the community and link them to other support services.  We recognise the important role of teams like the Living Room Roar and are proud to be supporting them,” said Richmond’s Community Co-ordinator Michael Lacy.
