COLLINGWOOD will pursue Fremantle defender Chris Tarrant even if full-back Simon Prestigiacomo decides to play on.

Prestigiacomo, who will be 33 in January, has been given time to make his decision on whether to press into a 16th season.

Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine said Tarrant would be considered for a "multi-dimensional role" rather than a spot solely in the backline.

"[Tarrant] would just give us another dimension to our list," Hine told afl.com.au's Trade Week Radio.

"In Simon's case, he's probably a little bit more one-dimensional and I don't think that's a great secret.

"I don't think that will have any reflection on whether Chris comes in or he doesn't."

Hine also said Tarrant's potential return to the Pies wouldn't affect the development of premiership defenders Nathan Brown and Ben Reid, who both took giant steps in 2010.

"We see [Tarrant] as potentially coming in and supporting our list in not just one position but various positions," he said.

"Both of those boys have demonstrated over the season they're definitely going to be long-term players for us and we're very excited about their development and future development."

Hine said the Magpies told Fremantle on Tuesday that premiership trio Chris Dawes, Tyson Goldsack and Sharrod Wellingham were all required players and not available for trade.

However, he believed a deal would be struck with Freo before the end of the trade period to avoid another Luke Ball-type standoff, which would result in the Pies potentially getting Tarrant for free in the NAB AFL Draft.

He added that out-of-favour ruckman Josh Fraser, who missed out on the Pies' premiership after playing most of this year in the VFL, had attracted a few suitors he declined to name.

"Josh has been limited for opportunities at the moment and it's been well-documented that he is having a little look around," he said.

"That will play itself out in due course."

Meanwhile, Collingwood is confident star midfielder Dane Swan will stay despite rumours of a lucrative offer from GWS in the next 12 months.

"That was always going to happen; the fact that he was out of contract towards the end of next year," Hine said.

"I know Geoff (Walsh) and the boys are working pretty closely and I'm hopeful the group we have together, if you look at the age profile of the list, are thereabouts for the next two or three years.

"That's a bit of an attraction for all players at the club."
