IT'S THAT time of year again already. The official AFL player exchange period, one of the most hyped and speculated about weeks on the league's calendar, gets underway on Monday morning at Telstra Dome.

Recruiting teams from all 16 clubs will convene at 10am armed with their wish lists and a few names they might just be convinced to part company with if the right offer presents itself.

With the coming NAB AFL Draft the last before concessions are made to the incoming 17th and 18th teams, clubs will be reluctant to part with precious early picks, but there is an impressive list of established players looking for new homes that could prove tempting.

Up until the weekend, Daniel Kerr headed that list of players who were either confirmed or reported to be on the move to a new club. His contract extension with West Coast leaves Sydney Swans forward Ryan O'Keefe as the big fish in the trade pond, but there are plenty of others that will attract some keen interest.

A tug of war between Fremantle and Carlton looms over ruckman Robbie Warnock, with Freo rebuffing an initial offer of the Blues' second round pick (No.24).

"Robbie is in his fourth year as a league ruckman and he is a terrific kid and he's got a lot of things going for him, particularly his age," Fremantle coach Mark Harvey told afl.com.au.

"So we're looking for something below [pick No.24]. Hopefully, we can get Robbie solved early in the week, but I'm not sure if that will happen."

Other players of note who look likely to come into trade week calculations are West Coast's Mark Seaby, North Melbourne's Daniel Harris, Bulldog Farren Ray, Essendon's Andrew Lovett and Port Adelaide's Adam Thomson, with many more waiting in the wings.

Alterations to trading rules before last year's trade period saw an increase in the number of players switching clubs, with many going on to become important contributors.

Chris Judd headlined that group, but the likes of Stephen King, Jordan McMahon, Ben Hudson, Adam Schneider, Marty Mattner, Brad Symes and Travis Johnstone have underlined the importance of effective trading as teams strive for a successful combination.

Newly crowned premier Hawthorn can attest to that with three of its flag-winning side – Trent Croad, Brent Guerra and Stephen Gilham – joining the club via a trade.

Other notable trades that have proved pivotal to premiership success include Darren Jarman to Adelaide (1997 and 1998 premiers), Brad Ottens and Cam Mooney to Geelong (2007) and Barry Hall to the Swans (2005).
