Geelong captain Steven King was told to discard his specially fitted boot yesterday and take his first steps towards a full recovery from last month's surgery on his troublesome achilles tendon.

Cats' football manager Garry Davidson said King met with the surgeon yesterday and was delighted with the news that the ruckman had made excellent progress toward his planned return to the senior side in round five.

"He's out of the cam walker (boot), he had that on for a couple of weeks but he's out of that now,'' Davidson said.

"He is on a pretty strict schedule that involves some walking and moving forward, making sure that everything is ready to go.''

Davidson said King had continued his weights program while off the track and was in good spirits after being told to begin walking without the boot.

"He's fine. He's happy to be out of the cam walker so that he can move forward.''

Davidson said the club had not received the full report on King's check-up but would know more about the specifics of his recovery in the coming days.

Davidson was unsure when King would be able to resume full training with the main group but said the ruckman would be closely monitored by the team's medicos in the lead-up to his planned return in five weeks.

"In the early days we were talking 8-10 weeks and that is still the scenario,'' he said.

Meanwhile, Davidson said David Loats was also making a speedy recovery from surgery on his knee and was scheduled to return in round four.
