JOSH Caddy seems some way off finding a new home, with Gold Coast wanting two first-round draft picks in compensation for the 20-year-old midfielder.

The Age reports that the two clubs leading the race to secure Caddy in the Gillette AFL Trade Period - St Kilda and Geelong - were surprised at the Suns' demand and won't meet it.

North Melbourne is also a strong chance of getting Caddy.

Meanwhile the Suns could spring a surprise and target Hawthorn defender Stephen Gilham.

The Courier Mail suggests the Suns, in the wake of Brian Lake's arrival at Hawthorn, will target Gilham as they strive to beef up their backline.

Melbourne was the big winner on day one of trade period having secured father-son selection Jack Viney with its second-round draft pick.

The Demons are also likely to snare 17-year-old key forward Jesse Hogan through the GWS mini-draft, a deal expected to be ratified on Tuesday.

Speculation suggests it is likely to include the Demons swapping pick three and 13 and getting Hogan, pick 20 and Dom Barry from North Ballarat as a pre-listed player from the Giants.

But the Demons are facing some competition in luring the services of Collingwood forward Chris Dawes.

Melbourne was optimistic of its chances of snatching the contracted forward from Collingwood's grasp, but The Age suggests the Western Bulldogs and Carlton remain in the hunt if Dawes decides to leave the Magpies.

Although St Kilda is keen on arranging a deal for West Coast defender Mitch Brown, it won't be in a straight swap for Jamie Cripps, as the Saints had hoped on Monday.

West Coast list manager Craig Vozzo told The Age the club was not resigned to losing Brown.

"We see him as an important part of our future," he said. "We see him playing for us for the next six years or more."

But St Kilda list manager Chris Pelchen said the Saints were still confident an agreement could be reached.

"Mitch has made it clear to us, through his management, and also to the Eagles that he'd like to return home to Melbourne," Pelchen told SEN.

"With Jamie Cripps indicating the same through his manager to us, we thought it was a win-win situation for both clubs, with both players wanting to return to their original state.

"At the moment the Eagles are resisting moving Mitch away from their club to any club, not just St Kilda.

"We'll continue those discussions. We're still confident we can get a deal done but obviously it'd have to be attractive to both parties."

The Sydney Swans and Adelaide were no closer to formalising a deal for out-of-contract forward Kurt Tippett after day one of talks.
