The Swans were facing a 22-point half time deficit when Adam Schneider and Nick Riewoldt were closing in on goal against an isolated Ted Richards deep in St Kilda’s forward line in the final minute of yesterday’s first half.

Richards made the tough decision to leave his man and pressure Schneider knowing that an effective kick would have left Riewoldt alone in the goalsquare with the easiest of goals. But, as it so often did for him yesterday, Richards’ endeavour paid off, as he got a hand on the ball and stopped the Saints from scoring.

Moments later with the Saints still attacking, Josh Kennedy intercepted a St Kilda inside 50 which landed in the hands of Lewis Jetta. Jetta rebounded from defence, got a handball inside to Kennedy who found the leading Jesse White with a pin-point kick through the corridor.

White took the mark down low and fired out a handball to McVeigh who had ran unguarded from the edge of his defensive 50.

Without breaking stride, McVeigh closed in on goal and drilled a low, dribbling goal through from 50 metres out. The goal came at a crucial time in the match, and with the help of Richards down the other end, the Swans converted a classic two-goal turnaround which kept them within striking distance at the main break.

McVeigh’s goal was one of many highlights from yesterday’s win over the Saints, which can be seen in SwansTV’s ‘Handpicked Highlights’.
