4. Sydney Swans v West Coast Eagles, round one, fourth quarter

IF THEY were going to build a statue to immortalise the feats of Daniel Kerr on the football field, they could do worse than to use a snapshot of this moment:

It's late in the last quarter at Telstra Stadium, Sydney v West Coast, round one 2007, a rematch of the 2006 Grand Final.

As ever with these two teams, it's an arm wrestle. A single goal is a blowout considering the combined margin across the previous five battles has been 12 points.

West Coast had come into the season under enormous pressure. The club’s suspension of former skipper Ben Cousins had its premiership price drifting wildly. People speculated on the likely effect such off-field disruptions would have on the team.

But round one put the doubters back in their boxes. Despite missing a host of stars from the previous September, the Eagles soared.

And the Swans were the Swans. Despite letting the lead get out to an unheard-of six goals, they fought their way back. And back.

And with three goals in four minutes, the hosts were just a solitary point down inside the last minute, and going forward.

Then Kerr occurred. A superb game from the nuggetty midfielder – 28 possessions (21 of them contested) and eight free kicks for – culminated in a stellar gut-running chase that ran down Nic Fosdike just as he was about to boot the ball to the hotspot. Instead, Kerr got a free he was almost too tired to take and the game was over.

The best possible start to the season.
