GOLD COAST has released 19-year-old Rex Liddy from his contract after the North Queenslander said he wanted to end his AFL career.
The Suns said they have worked closely with Liddy to try and revive his hunger to train and play at the elite level, but supported his decision.
Liddy played four games for Gold Coast in its inaugural season, including the round 17 win over Richmond in Cairns.
With the Suns required to submit its AFL list on Wednesday, Liddy, his manager and the club decided a contract release was appropriate.
Gold Coast general manager of football operations Marcus Ashcroft said the club was committed to working with Liddy and assisting him going forward.
"We completely understand Rex’s position, and have been working with him and his manager for some time assisting where we could off the field and trying to reignite his passion for AFL," Ashcroft said.
"Although disappointed to lose him, we will assist him in his transition back into life away from the Suns and wish him every success in the future."
Liddy was a Queensland zone selection, joining the Suns in 2010.
