Michael Firrito has had a bit more than football on his mind of late with the wedding to his fiancée Bonnie just ten days away. The North Melbourne tough man gave kangaroos.com.au the inside word in the lead up to his highly anticipated nuptials.

“I’m not too nervous yet. I think maybe closer to the date the nerves will set in. The boys are giving it to me a bit at the moment,” he said laughing.

As expected, the ceremony will have a distinct North Melbourne flavour.

“Big Hamish McIntosh is one of the groomsmen as well as a couple of past North Melbourne players Brent LeCras and Kris Shore.

“I even met my best man Jason through the club back in 2006 when he was my player sponsor. We built a good relationship and have been best mates ever since.”

Firrito has been trying hard to avoid any bumps or bruises before the big day to ensure he’s looking his best.

“I clashed heads the other day with Levi Greenwood and I was worried when I went down that I would have a black eye or broken cheekbone, he’s got a pretty hard head! Luckily I was okay. It’s not the best looking canvas anyway; I didn’t want any more bruises or scars.”

Firrito says he hasn’t been overly ‘hands-on’ with the preparations, instead he’s played more of a supporting role.

“I was in Utah for a whole month in the lead up, so I probably haven’t been too helpful, Bonnie’s done it all. I was put in charge of the cars and the suits so hopefully the car turns up and the suits look good.

“Hamish needed a specially made shirt because the big guy’s got long arms.”

Once he returns from a relaxing honeymoon in Bali, Firrito says he’s looking forward to 2012 and the strong competition from within the North Melbourne side.

“All of a sudden it feels like we have a lot of depth in every line so there’s certainly going to be a competition for spots. The boys are already pretty competitive out on the track and we know the season will come around really quickly.

“Our first NAB Cup game is in February and hopefully our hard work in Utah will hold us in good stead so we can get out there and have some success next season.”
