The Sydney Swans have defeated the Richmond Tigers 13.7.85 to 10.6.66 in the regional challenge match at Manuka Oval in Canberra. The Swans fielded a more experienced side than the one that lost to the Western Bulldogs last weekend, including captain Leo Barry, dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes, and new star recruit Peter Everitt, while the Tigers opted for a fresher look with their players averaging only 24 games each.Everitt made his much-anticipated appearance after seven minutes and worked hard throughout various spells in the match but still looked like he needed to work with his teammates on their combinations and communication. The experience of the Swans had them easily in control of the game but the youthful Tigers fought admirably and clawed their way back into the game in the final stages. At the start of the first quarter the sides traded goals until three for the Swans in quick succession just before the break, including a brace for Nic Fosdike, saw them leading at quarter time. Both sides gave their youth a chance to shine in the scorching hot Canberra weather. Jesse White impressed having moved into defence despite scoring three goals last weekend and Simon Phillips ended the game with three goals including a scorcher in the second quarter.Phillips rose above the pack and took a spectacular mark before finishing it off from right in front. In the ruck, Adam Pattison and Angus Graham performed well for the Tigers against Everitt and Darren Jolly. The Swans led by four goals at half-time and came out firing in the second, with Jonathon Simpkin, Keiren Jack, and Phillips scoring to cancel out a goal from Tigers skipper Kane Johnson. The Tigers scored four goals, which included a second for Cameron Howat, to Sydney’s two in the final quarter as they added some respectability to the scoreline and pleased their small contingent of fans that stood among the 3,365 at Manuka Oval.Fosdike was placed on report for striking Tiger Matt White towards the end of the game.Overall, the grand-finalists of the last two years looked too strong against an experimental Tigers outfit, especially in the ruck, and Swans coach Paul Roos was pleased with his team’s performance."We played some good footy," Roos said."Some of the senior players are working their way into good form, and some of the young guys have been pretty good over the first three weeks too."But we still have a way to go."Tigers coach Terry Wallace was unfazed by the result."I was pleased with our performance. I mean, we came up with a pretty young squad, and they handled themselves really well," Wallace said after the match."Obviously our opposition was more senior and experienced, especially in the ruck area of the game. We had two young blokes playing in that area but I thought our boys performed admirably over the course of the day and we got some good things out of the journey."We rested all our senior players this week and they’ll all play in the next two weeks as we get closer to the season proper, and I expect I’ll bring 10 senior players back into the line-up next week."SYDNEY: 5.2, 8.3, 11.5, 13.7 (85)RICHMOND: 2.1, 4.3, 6.6, 10.6 (66)GOALS - Sydney: Phillips 3, Fosdike 2, White, O’Loughlin, Simpkin, Buchanan, Schmidt, Goodes, Shaw, JackRichmond: Johnson 2, Howat 2, Graham 2, Schulz, Pattison, Krakouer, HartiganBEST - Sydney: White, Phillips, Buchanan, Goodes, Fosdike, O’LoughlinRichmond: Schulz, Howat, Tambling, Delidio, ClinganINJURIES: NilREPORTS: Fosdike (Sydney) for striking White (Richmond) in the final quarterCrowd: 3,365 at Manuka Oval, Canberra
