The Melbourne Cricket Club offer would see AFL clubs share $5 million a year over the next 10 years of the agreement, but the AFL claims it would generate $1.6 billion in football income to the MCC over that time.
In a statement released on Tuesday night the AFL said: “The deal, which requires an extension of the contract for a further 10 years, would continue to deliver greater benefits to the stadium than to clubs.”
The AFL believes that any offer of less than $5 million per annum is unfair.
Western Bulldogs’ president David Smorgon, on behalf of the clubs’ delegation, said football supporters wanted a deal that returned more of their dollars to their clubs – and not to the stadium.
“We have said consistently we want a fair go. A deal that extends the agreement and the amount of supporters’ money that goes to the stadium rather than to the clubs that generate the economy is unfair,” Smorgon said.
