Three Geelong players were last night named in the VFL Team of the Year at the JJ Liston Medal count in Melbourne.

Rookie-listed pair Jason Davenport and Todd Grima earned selection for their stellar seasons, while VFL captain James Byrne etched his name into VFL immortality with his fourth team of the year selection in as many seasons.

Byrne was named in the centre, Davenport on a wing and Grima in a forward pocket.

Davenport and Grima both earned VFL team of the year selection for the first time.

Davenport’s inclusion comes a year after he was awarded the Fothergill-Round Medal as the most promising young VFL player.

He played all 18 home and away matches this season, averaging two goals a game and was named in the Cats’ best five times.

Grima missed two matches this season - one through illness and another through suspension - but still managed to kick 48 goals to sit inside the league’s top five goal kicking ladder at the end of the home and away season.

Davenport and Byrne also represented Victoria in this season’s State of Origin match against Western Australia, while Grima was also in strong contention, but was squeezed out of the side’s potent forward line that featured perennial goal kicking machines Nick Sautner and James Podsiadly.

Only Geelong VFL listed players and Geelong AFL rookie listed players are eligible for selection in the VFL Team of the Year.
