THE WESTERN Bulldogs' stunning start to the season could soon be complemented by the return of Farren Ray, with the midfielder set to resume this weekend in the VFL.

Ray, 22, has been sidelined with a fractured foot sustained in the Bulldogs' opening NAB Cup clash with the Kangaroos in Darwin in February.

The former No. 4 draft pick will play for Williamstown this weekend against Geelong and hopes to be considered for senior selection in the coming rounds.

"I'll soon see how the fitness is and hopefully I'll get through three or four quarters this weekend and push for selection in the upcoming weeks," Ray said on Thursday.

"It's no good watching a team win so well, but I've had a good run with injury in my first three or four years on the list.

"I've copped this injury but I'm back soon anyway, so I'm really looking forward to that."

Ray's teammate Robert Murphy said the Bulldogs won't be distracted by the prospect of equalling the club's best start to a season since 1946 when they face Richmond this Sunday.

"Every game is a big game, and I watched the game between Fremantle and Richmond last week and Richmond was outstanding," he said.

"I'm sure on Sunday it will be a pretty tough and tight contest."

Murphy said captain Brad Johnson is keeping his persistent leg problems low key and will be fine to play this weekend despite thigh and hip soreness.

"He's looking alright, he's still pretty happy and as bubbly as he always is," Murphy said.

"When you've played 300 games, you've played with injuries like he has done numerous times, so I'm sure he'll be fine."

The Bulldogs will also face a former teammate this weekend, lining up against Jordan McMahon who crossed to Tigerland at the end of last season.

Murphy said the Dogs won't focus on making McMahon unwelcome, instead giving priority to the overall task.

"I think the game is too quick for that sort of thing now," he said.

"Jordy is in good form so we'll try and negate him just as we'll try and negate their other good players."
