ESSENDON coach James Hird has confirmed the club will attempt to meet with Greg Inglis this week regarding the possibility of the NRL star changing codes and joining the Bombers.

Hird said he was yet to speak to the 23-year-old but was interested in his renowned athletic ability.

"Sometime over the next couple of days we'll try and catch up for a chat," Hird said at the Bombers' open training session at Windy Hill on Wednesday morning. "We'll ask him the question and if we're happy with the answer then we'll see what happens.

"We haven't even talked to him yet. It's really only speculation about whether we'll take him, whether he'll come to AFL.

"He's got to make a decision whether he wants to leave NRL and then it's up in the air as to what he does."

Inglis is currently without a rugby league home after his attempted move from Melbourne Storm to South Sydney - after he reneged on a deal with the Brisbane Broncos over third party deals - was blocked by the NRL owing to concerns on how he would fit into the Rabbitohs' salary cap.

He has been linked to Essendon and the AFL previously with former Bombers coach Kevin Sheedy reported to have been interested in him back when he was at Windy Hill.

Hird said he was contacted by the club's CEO Ian Robson on the weekend regarding Inglis after the status of the Rabbitohs' contract was announced in a statement from the NRL.

He also said the Bombers would only pursue Inglis if they decided he would be a good fit for both the game and their club.

"Unless he can help us on the footy field, we're not interested," Hird said.

"He's got to be a player who can help us. He's an amazing athlete, there's no doubt about that.

"He's one of the best athletes in Australian sport. I've seen him play rugby league, he's an exceptional athlete."

Hird said he wasn't concerned how the Bombers would be viewed if they signed Inglis, as they would only attempt to recruit him if he proved a worthy candidate.

"Our list won't be seen as a novelty no matter what we do," he said.

"It will be seen as a serious AFL list and if he wants to play AFL football, we think he's good enough to play AFL football, we'll have a talk to him and go after him.

"If not, we won't."

Hird said the Bombers would not speak to the AFL about how they could add Inglis to their list until they had gauged the NRL player's own interest.

Inglis could become the third NRL player to make the transition to AFL after Karmichael Hunt and Israel Folau.

Hunt played in the VFL with the Gold Coast Suns this year and will make his league debut in 2011 while Folau will run out with the Greater Western Sydney Giants in the NEAFL next season before they enter the AFL in 2012.
