IN our weekly schedule, Tuesday means match review.
We all gather together in a room with the coaches, and go through the match we’ve just played. As you can imagine, some weeks it doesn’t make very pleasant viewing and there are guys who dread it.
But I’m not one of them. After losing three games in a row, there is a lot of disappointment, but to tell you the truth we try to make sure match review is conducted in the same manner whether we win or lose.
It usually starts with Roosy showing us some video clips, and he and the other coaches go through the game and dissect it.
They ask questions. “What plan did we have during the week? Did we achieve that? Did guys play their role?’’
We talk about whether it’s a yes or no, and where we want to improve.
So win or lose, the message is delivered in the same way, otherwise when you win you can gloss over areas, and if you lose it can be magnified. So we try to make everything clear and not too emotional.
Match review is more of a learning forum - it is not about bashing guys over the head, it is about learning and improving. It is not a personal attack.
So, then we turn to what we can do about it. As always, it starts with the training track. You keep doing the extras and training hard and eventually it will turn around, that’s what I strongly believe.
I guess there are no guarantees, but all we can ask is that the guys do everything above and beyond what is required and ensure they are getting their bodies right and doing the extra skills sessions. That goes a long way to being able to perform on the weekend.
In the leadership group, we speak about being enthusiastic around the place and keeping the mood up, no matter what happens.
I went to the movies last Sunday, to see the Kings of Mykonos, just to forget about footy for a day.
For the past few years I have really focused on having a more relaxed attitude, no matter whether things are going well or badly. I focus on training hard and playing well, but when I go away from the club, I take my mind off it by doing different things.
I do worry about my form and the team’s form of course, but I don’t lose sleep if I’m playing badly. It’s more constructive to get back to the basics and train hard and eventually it will come.
The beauty about football is that there is always next week. You front up again, you do everything you can to win, and you move on and hopefully improve.
