DUAL Sydney Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes will remain eligible to receive a third league best and fairest award this year, even if he opts to take the one-match suspension on offer from the match review panel.
Goodes was handed the one-week ban for his level one striking offence against Port Adelaide's Matt Thomas.
The charge attracted 80 demerit points and a reprimand but Goodes had another 70.31 carry-over points on his record.
That increased the total demerit points to 150.31 which equates to a one-match ban.
An early guilty plea and consequent 25 per cent discount would only reduce that to 112.73 points which means Goodes would still face a week off.
However, he would remain eligible for the 2008 Brownlow under league rules.
This is because the base number of demerit points from this actual incident is less than 100.
Under the match review panel's rules, any player who commits an offence that initially draws less than 100 demerit points remains eligible to win the coveted award even if carry-over points or a bad prior record increases the base amount.
Despite the fact he'll remain in Brownlow contention regardless of his decision, Goodes has another reason why he could choose to fight his charge at the tribunal and play in the Swans' Rivalry Round clash with the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.
This weekend, he is due to play his 194th consecutive game, which would equal the fourth-best streak in the history of the game and also equal his club's all-time record.
Teammate Jared Crouch had a streak of 194 consecutive games between 1998 and 2006.
Crouch is fourth on the all-time consecutive games list behind Jim Stynes (244 games for Melbourne between 1987-98), Adem Yze (226 games for Melbourne between 1997-2007) and Jack Titus (202 games for Richmond between 1933-43).
