GEELONG star Paul Chapman has re-signed with the club for an undisclosed term.

The news comes as the Cats begin their 2008 finals campaign, where they are hot favourites to win a second successive premiership.

Geelong chief executive Brian Cook said Chapman’s signing was a show of loyalty, placing greater value on success rather than money.

“It (Chapman’s contract) was done two days ago and yeah it is a relief. We’re relieved that we have just about got all of our squad done, there’s only a handful left,” Cook told the Herald Sun.

Over the past 11 months, Geelong has re-signed Chapman’s premiership teammates Jimmy Bartel, Steve Johnson, Cameron Ling, Joel Selwood, Cameron Mooney, Brad Ottens, Joel Corey, Darren Milburn, Tom Harley, James Kelly and Corey Enright.

Tom Hawkins, Mark Blake and the injured Matthew Egan have also put pen to paper.

Nine Geelong players were selected in last year’s All-Australian team, resulting in financial incentives and a strain on the salary cap.

Cook said the club was looking at ceasing such clauses in contract negotiations.
“It was becoming a high-risk strategy for us,” he said.

Chapman missed All-Australian selection but was one of Geelong’s best in last year’s grand final win over Port Adelaide, booting four goals and finishing second to Johnson in the voting for the Norm Smith medal.
