AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou has ruled out a mid-season alteration to the priority pick rule, despite the attention it continues to draw in relation to “tanking” for better draft selections.

Demetriou said the league will not look at reviewing the rule, which has been once again shunted into the spotlight courtesy of former Carlton assistant coach Tony Liberatore's recent claims that the Blues tanked late last year to guarantee the No.1 draft pick.

“We debated it 18 months ago and we came up with a new system where we awarded teams over a two-year period,” he said on Monday.

“It's certainly not on the agenda for this year, given that we don’t like changing things mid-season, and we certainly don't like changing things after a year and a half.

“I’m sure it will be a topic of discussion and it will probably heat up around round 16 this year.”

Demetriou, who was present at Punt Road for the State Government's financial handout announcement, was yet to be briefed on a meeting between Liberatore and the AFL earlier that day. The Brownlow medallist's sensational claims were high on the agenda.

“I don't know how it went and I haven't spoken to them yet,” he said. “I did hear the radio interview on Saturday but let's just wait until I get a briefing this afternoon and we'll take it from there.

“I just hope we get to the bottom of what Tony was talking about. There's a process in place now and it's important that process is there. It's begun, and we'll go about it as we normally would.”

He also said he had taken time to explain to Terry Wallace what the nature of his recent suggestion the Richmond coach may be out of a job this year should the Tigers qualify for their own priority pick.

“I answered lots of questions at the press conference on Friday following the Commission meeting, and I was asked a question about the issue relating to the priority pick and my views,” Demetriou said.

“I went on to stress that I thought the price of acquiring a priority pick was not worth people’s reputations and livelihoods. That was how I answered the question in terms of Terry, and I explained that to him because he only got bits and pieces of grabs, as is the case when things get edited and spliced and diced on the news.

“I think he was appreciative of my explanation and I hope it appeased him.”
