I’ve been hit by the World Cup bug like so many of you, and have been watching with much interest.
I love watching these highly talented players putting on such a quality show of skills for all of us to see. The World Cup is played every four years and this year it is held in South Africa. Although the time difference is a bit of an issue, if there is a game I want to watch I will set my alarm clock and get up.
I watched the Socceroos go down to the favorites of the competition, Germany, on Sunday night and was left feeling disappointed. They simply outclassed us all over the pitch but hopefully we can pull of a miracle and beat Ghana.
That is one thing about the Australian spirit - you can never write us off. If you do, then you leave yourself open up for an upset.
It was quite funny when I arrived at the club on Monday and suddenly everyone had become an expert, giving you their thoughts on why we lost. That’s ok, but when players like Irishman Chris McKaigue give you grief about the Aussies’ performance, I find that a bit rich. I keep telling him that Ireland didn’t even qualify and he shouldn’t say anything. It’s all done in good spirit.
We have a World Cup sweep going on at the footy club and Tadhg and myself drew Italy so I hope they can replicate last World Cup’s performance and go all the way.
It is going to be tough with the Germans, Argentinians and the skilful Brazillians as potential threats. If they can win I’ll venture down to Norton Street, Leichhardt, and join in with the celebrations with all the Italians.
