THE GREY clash jumper worn by Melbourne in last Sunday's game against St Kilda at the Telstra Dome is on the way out, much to the joy of fans who were vociferous in their opposition to the alternate strip.

The Age reported on Thursday that the design which caused so much angst among the Demons faithful was to go, although probably not before the end of the season.

Demons CEO Paul McNamee said the club has gained permission from the AFL to do the redesign, despite AFL rules stating that clash strips could only be reviewed every two years.

"We do want to listen to our supporters and this is a way of doing that after the brouhaha on the weekend," he said yesterday.

"This obviously didn't sit well with our supporters and we have talked to the AFL to revisit that.

"We want red and blue as far as possible," McNamee said. "They are the colours that we own and they are what is near and dear to us and our supporters.

"We will do everything possible to find a variation that uses more of the red and blue."

But this option is not guaranteed as the club has previously proposed a jumper that switched the red and the blue of the home strip, a design that was rejected by the league because it clashes with teams such as Sydney, the Western Bulldogs and Essendon.
