The moment: Carlton might have fallen short of a stirring comeback after trailing by five goals, but early in the last quarter they had the momentum. That continued when Kade Simpson turned over an errant kick from Michael Walters across the Blues’ half-forward line. He bombed it in and Jeff Garlett took the mark and snapped truly to bring the game to life.

2. Geelong 16.16 (112) d West Coast 10.8 (68) at Skilled Stadium

The moment: After working hard in the first half the Eagles were part of their own undoing early in the second. A poor kick-in allowed Cameron Mooney to pounce with his tackle knocking the ball free. Gary Ablett then gathered and kicked the goal. The play encapsulated the whole game - Eagles try hard, undo their good work with poor skills, Cats slam the door shut.

3. Hawthorn 15.8 (98) d Collingwood 13.17 (95) at the MCG

The moment: Hawthorn forward Cyril Rioli injected some magic into the game. With opponent Luke Ball struggling to take possession close to Hawthorn’s goal, Rioli poked foot to ball, dribbled it to himself then steadied and soccered it past the outstretched hands of Darren Jolly and the inside of the goalpost to give the Hawks a much-needed spark.

4. Adelaide 9.11 (65) d St Kilda 5.7 (37) at AAMI Stadium

The moment: Umpire Shane McInerney proved that umpires do keep their eyes on the ball no matter what. The umpire collided with Nathan van Berlo and was knocked to the ground. But this didn’t stop him awarding a free kick to the contest happening in front of him, even if he had to blow his whistle while sitting on the turf.

5. Sydney Swans 16.10 (106) d Brisbane Lions 10.8 (68) at the Gabba

The moment: The Swans surged in the third quarter, and their fifth goal of the quarter came via some Lewis Jetta magic. Pinned deep in the forward pocket, Jetta centred the ball by throwing the footy on the outside of his boot and Josh Kennedy marked 15 metres out and goaled to put the match out of the Lions' reach.

6. Western Bulldogs 17.5 (107) d Essendon 11.12 (78) at Etihad Stadium

The moment: Bulldog Jarrad Grant had a night out. The young pup had a career-best match, marking well, dribbling them through from tight angles and snapping superbly to finish with six goals - stealing the show. He eclipsed his previous best mark of five majors in the final seconds of the match as the Dogs celebrated a return to form.

7. Port Adelaide 18.14 (122) d Richmond 16.16 (112) at Etihad Stadium

The moment: Robin Nahas had been the turnover king, but made his own goal through both skill and error. He got the ball in the middle from the bounce, handballed away, got it back, kicked at goal but saw it smothered, ran on, got it back and kicked the goal.

8. North Melbourne 17.11  (113) d Melbourne 15.13 (103) at the MCG

The moment: Lynden Dunn had all of the Melbourne and North Melbourne faithful shaking their head in disbelief as he put his case forward for goal of the year. With an ugly pack forming, he threw his foot to a loose ball and from 40 metres out the ball wobbled and wobbled and somehow snuck through. The smile on his face afterwards told a thousand words.
