North Melbourne rookie Majak Daw says he was ‘blown away’ after spending a day at the tennis on Thursday, but not because of the on-court action.

The 19 year-old spent his day off doing work experience with the Channel Seven Network, roaming around the Melbourne Park tennis facility with reporters and cameramen.

Daw says he’s always been interested in the media, but wanted to see what it’s all about.

“I’ve always loved the sports part of the media and how you can connect with people that way. I’m not sure what path I want to take just yet, but it was great to see all the different areas and what goes into making television,” Daw told kangaroos.com.au.

Seven’s tennis Chief of Staff and experienced news reporter Chris Jones arranged a day pass for Daw and allowed him all access.

“It was fascinating because when you watch the tennis and other sports on TV, but you don’t really understand all the work that goes into it,” Daw said.

“Chris was an amazing bloke and really went out of his way to look after me.”

Daw spent most of the day with award winning reporter Michael Felgate who was filing reports back to the newsroom at the Docklands.

“Michael was great and really looked after me. There was a lot of team work that goes on with what he does. He has to work really closely with the cameraman and get the feed back in time for it to go on air.

“It was surprising to me to see just how much pressure they’re under to make all the deadlines throughout the day.”

After a brief chat with Alicia Molik, Daw headed indoors at Seven’s broadcast compound to view all the action in the main control room. There he met seasoned producer Glenn Postill who also covers the AFL for the network.

“Glenn showed me around and he introduced me to everyone and he was great at what he does.

“It was really nice of everyone to give me the chance to experience a day behind all the cameras. Michael has also offered to show me the Newsroom at Channel Seven as well which would be awesome.”
