FREMANTLE's youthful squad is burning up the pre-season training track as the club looks to build a stellar team for the future.

The club had a massive turnover of players at the end of the 2008 season with 14 new players arriving at the club in December via the various drafts.

On Monday, players underwent a tough three-plus hour training session at Fremantle Oval as the new fitness and conditioning staff continued to leave their mark.

Assistant coach Chris Scott said the heavy workload would hold the players in good stead and that fitness bosses Jason Weber and Chris Spinks had planned the program meticulously.

"It was pretty solid and it's hard work [for] this time of year. For this specific session, we felt our guys needed to top up based on the plans we made, so it was a little longer than usual," Scott said.

"We've got a strong belief in the staff the club has put together and they have every detail covered down to the last kilometre.

“They keep strict controls over what we do and as a coaching staff we have the utmost faith in them."

Rhys Palmer, Steven Dodd, Ryan Crowley and Daniel Gilmore are training the house down ahead of the opening NAB Cup game against Richmond at Subiaco Oval in less than a month but Fremantle does have some injury concerns.

Hayden Ballantyne, who kicked 75 goals in the WAFL and won the 2008 Sandover Medal, is facing a race against time to be ready for the start of the season after wrist surgery.

"Hayden is running really well, so physically he's in good shape and he's made a significant improvement on where he was in the WAFL last year,” Scott said.

“His wrist is also progressing really well, but it's one of those things that you won't know until he's had the time off.

"He needed a graft, they took some bone from his hip and the doctors and surgeons are confident he'll make a full recovery.

“We'd love to have him out there now and we think he can be an important player for us, but he is in pretty good shape and when he can do the ball work within a month we feel he can come along quickly."

Paul Duffield has also suffered a hand injury and will miss the early part of the NAB Cup campaign.

However, Des Headland (calf) and Chris Mayne (ankle) should be ready to resume full training within the next week.
