BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss has labelled Melbourne the "superpower of the future" after its 73-point demolition of the Sydney Swans at the MCG on Sunday.

The Lions face the resurgent Demons at the Gabba on Saturday night.

They lost to Melbourne in round five, kick-starting a horror stretch which has produced just one win from their last 13 games.

Voss compared the Melbourne side to reigning premier Geelong in the way it dominated the Swans.

"The way they moved and the way that they played the game, you certainly think, are we seeing the superpower of the future?" Voss said.

"That’s the way Geelong [play], being able to move the ball like that and with the younger players that they have got in there at their disposal, it is quite impressive.

"I would imagine they are probably talking finals."

Voss even went so far as to compare Melbourne to the emerging Lions side of the late '90s which went on to claim three straight premierships.

"The early signs for them are they are on the right path," Voss said.

"They have been able to certainly stockpile those [draft] picks and pick well and they have got some [players] that are having an impact straight away.

"They are starting to play together, they are getting comfortable with one another and that will only get better over a period of time."

Voss said the Demons intimidated the Lions in round five, a game which ended the Lions' four-game winning streak to start the season.

He said Melbourne's speed and intensity had improved further since then.

"They do want to move the ball all the time. They don't hold it in their hands very long [and] they do run and spread quick," Voss said.

"We have got to consider how we get the game on our terms."

The Lions now face the very real prospect of hitting the bottom of the ladder this weekend if they lose to Melbourne, if Richmond beats Adelaide at the MCG. and the Eagles beat Fremantle at Subiaco.

But Voss said he was not thinking about the possibility of winning the wooden spoon in his second year as senior coach.

"No, because to me it's not about the finish," Voss said.

"It's about how we finish the season, and that for us is being able to ensure that we can get some of the things that we have been plugging away at.

"What you would like to get at some point in time is a reward for effort."

Ash McGrath will come back into the side after serving a one-week suspension for rough conduct while Simon Black may also rejoin the team after recovering from an ankle injury.

"He (Black) had a run around yesterday and moved OK so hopefully that progresses and then he will be OK," Voss said.

Voss said he otherwise expected few changes from the side beaten by Geelong by 63 points at Skilled Stadium.

"In terms of what they provided on the effort level [against the Cats], far and away much more improvement," Voss said.

"Hopefully we can back that up with another performance like that."
