THE SEASONS of Western Australia's two AFL teams ended almost three weeks ago, but some of the state's best young talent will be showcased in Sunday's WAFL grand final.
Up to 10 budding players hopeful of joining a senior list in November's NAB AFL Draft will take part in the battle between Subiaco and Swan Districts at Subiaco Oval – with Nicholas Naitanui (Swans) and Daniel Rich (Lions) the most high-profile.
Both players been touted as possible top-three selections in the draft.
Naitanui is the pick of the country's best young ruckmen, Rich is a stand-out midfielder while mid-sized Swans forward Chris Yarran will also figure in clubs' wish-lists.
Fijian-born Naitanui's athleticism generated plenty of interest throughout this year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and he considers the focus a bonus.
"I don’t mind the attention but I just try to continue what I'm doing and improving as I can," Naitanui said.
"I don’t take a lot of the notice of what people are saying but I do look to see whatever positives and negatives I can take out of it.
"There are so many people judging how I'm going so it's kind of a benefit at the same time."
Rich will lead Subiaco's young brigade and, after playing in last year's WAFL premiership, the long-kicking left footer is hopeful of replicating that triumph.
"I've been lucky to play in a few grand finals with school teams, club teams and last year playing as a 17-year-old in the grand final with Subiaco," he said.
"Every grand final is as good as the last and are an amazing experience, so I don’t want to take being there for granted.
"It's obviously a good experience to play at Subi against a good side like Swan Districts, so we are looking forward to that.
"My main focus is on winning and I'm not thinking of the draft or anything like that. I consider myself pretty lucky to be talked about by so many people, but my main goal is to help the team play well and that's all I'm focused on."
Yarran has proven a game breaker for Swan Districts all season, and his potential was evident with four goals in his side's preliminary final win over West Perth.
He's now looking forward to performing on Sunday's big stage
"I've just come back from a hamstring injury and have played pretty well in both finals, which has been good," he said.
"I've played well in grand finals before as well, so hopefully I can make sure this one doesn’t let me down.
"Everyone in Australia has seen us play through the 18s, so we will just concentrate on the game and we want to win. Nicko (Naitanui) and Richy (Daniel Rich) have received more attention than me and have dealt with the media more than I have, so I just let them get the media attention and I'll focus on playing a good game on Sunday."
Adam Cockie, Kyal Horsley, Blake Broadhurst and Greg Broughton also complement a strong Subiaco line-up that may see former Hawk and Eagle Daniel Chick left out.
The Swans have Clancee Pearce and Todd Banfield, plus a host of players in their colts grand final side that AFL clubs could pounce on.
Pearce joined Naitanui and Rich in the under-18 All-Australian team in July.
