ADELAIDE utility Scott Stevens says the sheer number of underdone players at West Lakes may count against star Jason Porplyzia and his quest for a round-one AFL return.

Porplyzia, 25, hasn't had match practice since developing pelvic soreness in January, but has completed two training sessions with his teammates in the past week.

Last season's leading goalkicker is no stranger to playing with injury, having dragged his side into the finals in 2008 despite nursing a badly dislocated shoulder.

There are several other underdone Crows vying for selection against Fremantle this week, including Bernie Vince, Nathan van Berlo and Ivan Maric.

Stevens said the selectors would have to consider the team's overall match fitness before deciding whether to include Porplyzia.

"Playing after limited preparation is obviously a difficult thing to do, but he [Porplyzia] played with injury last year a little bit. Whether he plays this week or not, I'm not sure," Stevens said on Tuesday.

"If he gets picked to play he'll give a contest and his fitness won't be disastrous. Match fitness is a little bit different to [training] fitness, but that's a decision that some else is going to make and not me."

Veterans Andrew McLeod and Tyson Edwards, midfielder Scott Thompson and pinch-hitting ruckman James Sellar are also in line for a recall after missing Adelaide's last NAB Challenge game against Carlton.

Unlike Porplyzia all four have played in at least one other pre-season game.

The Crows are unlikely to make more than five changes for the trip to Subiaco this week and Stevens said he was confident the team wouldn't be compromised by an injury-riddled pre-season.

"A lot of the guys that are putting their hand up to play this week have done this before," he said.

"They've been out of the side and they know what it takes to get themselves right and ready to go. They know the expectation from their teammates is that if they're putting their hands up and saying they're ready to play then they've got to perform."

One of the key issues facing coach Neil Craig is how many ruckmen to play against Fremantle man mountain Aaron Sandilands.

West Australian Jon Griffin held down the lead ruck spot in the absence of Maric during the pre-season competition and was supported by full-forward Kurt Tippett and undersized utilities Stevens, Sellar and Shaun McKernan.

The Crows are likely to name two ruckmen in the 24-man squad to travel to Perth on Friday, but Stevens remained tight-lipped as to which players would do battle with Sandilands.

"That's up to the selectors. Ivan trained well today and we know that he gives us a competitive effort every time that he plays," he said.

"So we've got a few options, but I don't imagine that I'll be facing up against Sandilands."
