The Hawk youngster picked up this week's nomination after his impressive 23 possession performance during the loss to the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome on Sunday.
He has played nine matches for the Hawks, after making his debut during the round three clash against Essendon at the MCG.
"I'm pretty surprised actually," Lewis said when asked his reaction to the nomination.
"It's probably just a string of games coming together and being consistent (that led to the nomination) but I was surprised when I got told.
"I've had a few good games within that nine so to get recognised as one of the rising stars is an honour."
He becomes the second Hawk to be nominated for this year's award after forward Lance Franklin, who was nominated after the Hawks' shock round four win over Brisbane.
Lewis was taken at pick seven in last year's national draft after being chosen in the All-Australian under 18 team.
Originally from Warrnambool in Victoria's south west, Lewis averaged 30 possessions per game last year for the Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup under 18 competition and has adapted quickly to the AFL in his debut season.
"I've been lucky that I was physically prepared - it's just a lot faster," he said.
"I've got to improve my fitness - this is probably the unfittest I'll ever be (in my career) but getting 20-odd touches a game has been good.
"I just want to do my bit for the team (for the rest of the year). I'll hopefully stay in the seniors and just keep playing consistent footy."
