In a new feature to collingwoodfc.com.au, “Stat Attack” will feature an in-depth look into the recently played Collingwood match.

With scores level after the first break, the Cats took hold of the match and subsequently the stats.

This week’s Stat Attack highlights the drop in key statistical areas across the match.

After the first term it was all Geelong as it reeled off nine unanswered goals during the second quarter.

The graph below indicates there were two patches of play that saw the Magpies fall behind by four goal margins.

The first ten minutes of the second quarter and the tail end of the fourth term were equally as damaging for Collingwood as it allowed 24 points from the opposition.

The graph is compiled with margins recorded in five minute intervals.  The time is referenced to the count-up clock (continuous).

On kicks, handballs and total disposals

The three graphs below suggest that while Collingwood was able to maintain quarter-by-quarter totals of kicks and disposals, its handball total per quarter proves the greatest discrepancy.

Graph on kicks

Collingwood's kick total was 146 to Geelong's 201.

Graph on handballs

Collingwood's handball total was 112 to Geelong's 191.

Graph on disposals

Geelong tallied 60 handballs for the quarter, almost double its effort in the first and 36 more than Collingwood.  The difference proved damaging to the Magpies effort, falling behind by 40 points.

Collingwood's disposal total was 258 to Geelong's 392.

On clearances and effective disposals

Geelong doubled Collingwood’s second quarter clearances (10-5) and finished the match with 38 compared to the Magpies’ 26.  It is interesting to note that both sides collected eight apiece in the first term.

Graph on clearances

Clearances totals were level after the first quarter with the next three terms going in Geelong's favour.

Graph on effective disposals

Collingwood registered its lowest effective disposal count of the night during the second quarter with 34 and Geelong capitalised collecting its highest quarter total with 83.

Tarkyn Lockyer

Veteran midfielder, Tarkyn Lockyer was one of the side’s best on the night.  The 29-year-old had six effective disposals during the second quarter to lead his team.  Lockyer was the only Collingwood player (besides Chris Dawes who played 27 minutes) to complete the game without a clanger, a considerable accomplishment considering he led the team in disposals with 20.
