Collingwood has named an experienced squad set take on St Kilda in round one of the NAB Cup.
With only four players unavailable through injury (see injury list), the Magpie coaching staff have signalled its intent on taking the preseason competition seriously by naming only seasoned players.
The 29-man squad, set to be culled to 26 (includes eight on the bench (two super-subs) and three emergencies) one hour before the match, includes former St Kilda captain Luke Ball, who has enjoyed a strong preseason with his new club after arriving to Collingwood via overall pick 30 in the 2009 national draft.
Ball will look to gather first usage from ruckman Darren Jolly, who was traded by Sydney at the end of last year and has impressed coaches and supporters with his touch around the stoppages during the intra-club matches.
Missing from last year’s preliminary loss to Geelong due to injury, Scott Pendlebury and Paul Medhurst have been named as has former Demon Simon Buckley who has recovered from injury (hip/groin) which saw his 2009 campaign derailed.
Young Magpies John McCarthy, Chris Dawes, Dayne Beams, Brent Macaffer and Steele Sidebottom will all be looking to make a bid for a spot in the club's best 22 for round one of the home-and-away season.
Mick Malthouse has continued the tradition with relinquishing head coaching duties during the preseason competition and will step aside for VFL head coach Gavin Brown on Friday night.
St Kilda has left out midfield stars Lenny Hayes, Nick Dal Santo and Jason Gram but has included 15 of the 22 players who represented the club in the grand final loss to Geelong last year.
