ESSENDON youngster Michael Hurley will front Melbourne's Magistrates Court next month after an incident in September.

The Bombers confirmed Hurley had been charged after the incident that saw the 19-year-old taken into police custody, but would make no further comment on Friday.

The club has admitted Hurley was drinking after taking part in The Footy Show’s grand final revue.

At the time of the incident, then Essendon managing-director Peter Jackson said the club was disappointed in Hurley’s actions.

"We are extremely disappointed that Michael was out so late and that he put himself in a situation where an incident occurred," Jackson said in a statement.

"He started drinking at the grand final Footy Show after-party and by night's end he had clearly had too much to drink.

"As a club we work with our players to help them make good choices - and the vast majority do - so it is disappointing and unacceptable that this situation has occurred.”

Jackson said the club viewed the incident seriously and prided itself on its good record of player behaviour.

"We run a number of community programs where our players work with young people to educate them about the dangers associated with binge drinking.

"We are treating the matter very seriously and will take appropriate action once the details are clear. The club will continue speaking with Michael and he will assist police anyway he can."

Hurley was one of the genuine finds of 2009, playing nine games for the Bombers as both a defender and forward. He was drafted from the Northern Knights with pick five at the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.
