KEVIN Sheedy enters the AFL Hall of Fame following an unparalleled career in which he played 251 games for Richmond and coached the Bombers to four flags during his 27-year, 635-match stewardship of the club.

As a player, Sheedy tasted premiership glory three times in his 13 years at Punt Road, was named the club's Best and Fairest player in 1976 and captained the side in 1978. He received the AFL Players' Association most valuable player award in the Tigers' 1974 premiership year and represented Victoria eight times.

As decorated as his playing career was, Sheedy would go on to achieve even greater heights after he replaced Barry Davis as coach of Essendon in 1981. It marked the beginning of a golden era for the club during which he guided the team to the finals on 19 occasions for a total of 43 matches that yielded the ultimate success in 1984-85, 1993 and 2000.

The master strategist was never afraid to try new tactics on the field and played a pivotal role in promoting the game off it. His involvement in developing the Anzac Day blockbuster with Collingwood and his work in advancing aboriginal causes are among his finest achievements during a career that continues to enrich our great game.
