Port Adelaide has had many memorable moments over the last 140 years. After hours of argument, we’ve had a crack at narrowing it down to a Top 20 - listed below - and want you to narrow it further to a Top 5.

1. Messrs J Rann, G Ireland and R Leicester meet at North Parade, Port Adelaide, in April 1870 and form the Port Adelaide Football Club.

2. The first ever Port Adelaide team takes to the field on 24 May 1870, meeting the ‘Young Australians’ at the Glanville Hall Estate or “Buck’s Flat” as the ground was known.

3. In 1884 Port Adelaide wins its first premiership, having finished the season on top of the ladder with 11 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws competing in the SAFA competition.

4. In 1890, Port Adelaide wins its first Championship of Australia title.

5. In 1899, Stanley Malin becomes the first Port Adelaide player to win the Magarey Medal.

6. In 1902, Port Adelaide’s team colours change from magenta and blue to black and white, and the Magpie is adopted as the club’s emblem.

7. In 1914, the Port Adelaide team known as ‘The Invincibles’ goes through the season undefeated, winning the club’s eighth premiership and fourth Championship of Australia, while Jack Ashley becomes the fourth Port Adelaide player to win the Magarey Medal.

8. In 1945, after returning from war, Robert ‘Bob’ Quinn has an astonishing year of achievement for the Port Adelaide Football Club: coaching the club, captaining the team, winning the Magarey Medal (his second), winning the Best and Fairest Award and scoring the highest number of goals for the club.

9. In 1955, Fos Williams enjoys a year of unrivalled success in the history of the Port Adelaide Football Club: coaching the club, captaining the team, playing in a premiership, kicking the highest number of goals for the club and winning the Best and Fairest Award.

10. Six in a row. Port Adelaide wins the 1959 SANFL premiership to set an Australian record for an unbroken sequence of League Premierships - six in a row.

11. In 1965, Geof Motley plays in his ninth premiership for Port Adelaide and in so doing sets an Australian record for individual premiership successes at League level.

12. On 24 September 1977 Port Adelaide defeats Glenelg by eight points in the Grand Final to win the club’s 24th premiership in the SANFL’s Centenary Year.

13. In 1980, Russell Ebert becomes the most decorated individual player in the history of the SANFL when he wins an unprecedented fourth Magarey Medal.

14. In 1990, having failed in its bid to leave the SANFL to join the AFL competition, Port Adelaide wins its 30th premiership. During the same year, Scott Hodges becomes the 14th Port Adelaide player to win the Magarey Medal and sets an SANFL season goal-kicking record, booting 153 goals.

15. In 1994, Port Adelaide wins the tender for the second South Australian AFL license, the club finally realising its dream to play in the AFL. In the same year, the club showed why it was headed to the AFL, winning its 32nd premiership, defeating the Eagles.

16. In 1995, John Cahill coaches Port Adelaide to premiership success for an astonishing tenth time - a SANFL League record. He would go on to be named the club’s inaugural AFL coach.

17. On 29 March 1997, Port Adelaide plays its first game in the AFL - against Collingwood at the MCG.

18. On 20 April 1997, Port Adelaide plays its first game against the Adelaide Football Club and wins the historic ‘Showdown I’ by 11 points.

19. In 2002 Port Adelaide becomes the first South Australian club to win the McClelland Trophy - as AFL minor premier. The title is secured with an epic six-point win against Brisbane in the Round 22 clash at AAMI Stadium.

20. On 25 September 2004, Port Adelaide wins its first AFL Premiership defeating Brisbane in front of 77,671 people at the MCG. Byron Pickett becomes the first Port Adelaide player to win the Norm Smith Medal. Score: Port Adelaide 17.11 (113) d Brisbane 10.13 (73).
