The Kangaroos’ Daniel Wells is the Round 11 National AFL Rising Star nominee.
Wells, 18, played an important part in the emotion-charged match against the Tigers on Friday night.
His pinpoint kicking into the forward line and his tackle on David Rodan late in the final quarter contributed to the great win. It was Wells’ seventh match for the season.
Recruited from the Peel Thunder in the WAFL, the talented midfielder was the second selection overall in the National AFL Draft.
AFL recruiters have touted Wells as a player to watch with his evasive skills, good decision making and excellent kicking.
His athleticism was confirmed during the National AFL Draft Camp, held in October 2002, when he finished in the top five rankings in agility (8.20sec), beep test (level 14-13) + 3km time trial (10 min, 21 sec) and speed with a 2.96sec for 20 metres.
As Wells progressed through the National AFL Pathway Program, his achievements included: AIS/AFL Academy member 2001/2002, 2001 AFL Life Members scholarship winner, captained Australia in one of the International Rules matches against Ireland, represented Western Australian in the 2002 National AFL Under 18 Championship and was selected as an Under 18 All Australian.
