THE NAB AFL Under-18 Championships are wrapping up, but they won't be back at Etihad Stadium this year, which has disappointed some of this year competitors.

The final day of the championships has been held at Etihad Stadium for the last few year, but the protection of the surface has taken priority this year.

Players from all sides expressed some disappointment that they wouldn't get to play at Etihad Stadium, but most were philosophical about the decision, understanding the reasoning, and pointing out that Skilled Stadium and Visy Park were both superb grounds.

"It's a bit disappointing, and obviously our game won't be televised either, but we'll just deal with that and it's just another game of footy," NSW/ACT's Anthony Miles told afl.com.au.

"At the end of the day there are two goalposts at either end, and that's what it's about."

AFL ground operations manager Jill Lindsay said the championships would allow a 10-day break between games at Etihad Stadium before the round 14 match between Carlton and the Brisbane Lions on Thursday July 1.

“With three matches scheduled at Etihad Stadium over round 14 and the EJ Whitten Legends game on Tuesday July 6 it was agreed with stadium management that it would be best to move the games so as to minimise the impact on the ground,” she said.

Vic Country are the favourites to take the championships, and hard-running half-back and probable top-10 pick Shaun Atley said his side simply had to keep doing what it had done all championships to give themselves a shot.

"We're going alright at the minute, we're undefeated," Atley told afl.com.au. "We're a very close team, and we're going really well at the minute."
