MELBOURNE midfielder Brent Moloney has declared the Demons can notch its first win of the season next weekend when they host Fremantle at the MCG.

Despite Sunday's 52-point loss to Brisbane at the Gabba, Melbourne won the final term and showed plenty of spirit after being totally outclassed for the first three quarters.

Moloney is hopeful of taking that late momentum into the clash with Fremantle and snapping the club's six-match losing streak to start the season.

Melbourne played more aggressively and moved the ball quicker in the final term on Sunday and booted five goals to Brisbane's four.

''The last quarter was pleasing and hopefully we can take that into next week,'' Moloney said.

''We just have to get our first three quarters right. Our last quarters have been good over the past few weeks but we need to take that into the Fremantle game.

''We're playing at the MCG and Fremantle are not familiar to that ground and they're not going great as well so we've hit them at a good time. Take that last quarter into next week and you never know; hopefully we get our first win of the year.''

For that to happen though, Moloney admits he and his teammates need to improve their efficiency around the ground.

Moloney tried hard in the hot Brisbane conditions, racking up 30 possessions.

But getting the ball was not the problem for Melbourne; keeping it and being constructive was, with a number of mistakes leading directly to Brisbane scores.

''Our turnovers with our kicking and foot skills and handball skills really cost us. If we can fix that up we can definitely turn it around,'' Moloney said.

''Just the confidence to get that kick, to use that first option; Bails (coach Dean Bailey) has tried to drill that into us at training and hopefully we can get it right for four quarters.''

The 24-year-old was conscious of lifting his own game, saying his disposal under pressure needed some work.

But he was quick to give Demons supporters reason to believe they can turn things around, pointing out the efforts of the younger brigade.

''I think we've got a great future,'' he said.

''Young James Frawley stepped up again today and we've got a good, young group, and the young guys coming through are very promising. They have to wait and bide their time and eventually we'll come good.''
