Growing up in the 90s (no Kirky, not the 1890s), there was never a shortage of gadgets to entertain. One of my favourites was the Super Soaker 50, where I would have great fun soaking whoever happened to walk past with a blast of water. Another was the Sega Master System. I would literally spend hours every night playing Alex the Kidd until I would get told to turn it off. I would then just turn the volume down and continue playing, trying to outplay the henchmen in a game of Janken. This brings me to the scooter that I once bought with my hard-earned pocket money. I remember at primary school all the ‘cool’ kids were motoring along on these foreign two-wheeled toys. I was so jealous I didn’t have one and I had to get one. After bringing in my new scooter ready to practice my ‘bunnyhops’ and ‘180 stalls’ I shortly discovered that a new toy had taken over. I was devastated!
Perhaps my worst buy would be the 100 litre fish tank I bought and decked out with all the ridgy-didge equipment. It cost me a fortune and the idea was to buy a freshwater stingray and keep it in my bedroom. How cool would it be having a stingray to look at every day? Well, it never happened and the tank sat in my room for about nine months. It wasn’t all a waste. I learnt that if you leave water in the one place unfiltered for that amount of time, things start to grow. Algae had never been more intriguing!
You would think I would start to learn my lesson after a few of these examples but only recently I purchased an acoustic guitar. I had the urge to learn and maybe one day start playing gigs around the place. Well, the guitar has been sitting in the corner untouched, but it does make a great hat stand.
Note to self…maybe just borrow things before purchasing!
