Gwilt has been a fringe-player for much of his time in the AFL but has played in each of St Kilda's first eight wins after some mentoring from fellow Noble Park alumnus Archer.
"He was pretty honest with me and said I need to improve on my physicality. I had the body and the physical traits for it, but just getting it in my head that I could do that sort of stuff that he used to do," Gwilt said.
"He taught me about taking it one contest at a time."
Gwilt said he has faith that the Saints can maintain their high-intensity game style that has them undefeated after eight matches.
"I think we can. It comes down to preparation and everyone's attitude and mindset I guess. Preparing mentally and physically during the week to bring that effort and intensity," he said.
"That is pretty much what it comes down to and if everyone can keep doing that then we can keep ticking that effort off."
As for his role up forward, Gwilt says he is happy to take a back seat to high-profile teammates Nick Riewoldt, Justin Koschitzke and another former Noble Park boy, Stephen Milne.
"I really enjoy doing the 18-on-18 drills and when we do the match practice stuff at training, I like working in with them. They are pretty good at giving me feedback and talking to me. It's always positive and encouraging and I've learned a fair bit from them," he said.
"I'm not really fazed by how many goals I kick. I want to play my part in the team and do my role. That is all I focus on."
