NORTH Melbourne is expecting young gun Jesse Smith to be available to play in the Kangaroos' practice match in two weeks' time, despite the unlucky defender suffering hamstring soreness in the club's NAB Challenge match on Saturday.

Smith, 22, came off in the third quarter of the Roos' landslide win over Fremantle at Manuka Oval after tightening up in the leg.

Club chief of football Donald McDonald said Smith's history with hamstring injuries that saw him miss the majority of last season meant the Kangaroos would not take any chances with playing him sore.

"As a precautionary measure, we took him off the ground. He didn't tear his hamstring; it was more precautionary than anything," McDonald told afl.com.au on Monday morning.

"He iced it after the game and we're going to assess him. He'll get scans this afternoon.

"We're not overly concerned about it; we'll get him right as it's not serious and we think it will just become more of a management thing now."

The highly-touted 2007 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee has had a bad run of injuries, with a recurring ankle problem still restricting him to a modified training program.

The Kangaroos remain confident Smith is set for a better year than 2008 despite the setback, owing to the fitness base he's been able to build this summer.

"There's no doubt we'd prefer it didn't happen but the reality is it did," McDonald said.

"From a positive perspective, he has done all the work, which is a hell of a lot better than what he's done previously.

"A lot of his problems last year were caused by the fact he didn't have a really strong preparation; he missed about eight weeks training during the pre-season, whereas in this pre-season he hasn't missed a beat.

"He just has to work through it. He's had two practice matches, he didn't play last week so he's played in two intra-club matches. He didn't play in the round one of the NAB Cup but that was part of his program.

"He definitely doesn't do the same program that everyone else does, so that's where we've got to find the balance. That's the challenge."

McDonald said the club is optimistic Smith will be available to play in a hit-out the weekend after next.

"We'll know more today but he was never going to play this week anyway," he said.

"That was part of the program, so hopefully he'll be right for our next practice match."
