The Springvale Scorpions again surrended a three goal lead late in the final term against Coburg Tigers on Sunday at Coburg Oval. Late goals to Coburg forwards Adam Houlihan and Kayne Pettifer got the home side across the line by eight points. Better players for Springvale were Josh Houlihan (22 possessions and 3 goals) in the midfield, Ben Schwarze (21 disposals from the half back flank with some great aerial displays) and nuggety onballer Craig Callaghan (24 disposals). Others to feature included Heath Black who played an unusual role deep in defence on Pettifer, Troy Schwarze who helped negate the rampaging Adam Houlihan and also kicked a valuable running goal, whilst Saints goalsneak Stephen Milne finished the game with 5.3 after a slow start being well held by Richmond player Matthew Rogers. Brett Moyle again won plenty of the football whilst Jordan Barham was serviceable in his first game since being promoted temporarily to the Saints senior list to replace the injured Barry Brooks.
The Scorpions have now slipped to eighth spot on the VFL ladder and need to win at least one of their final two remaining games to consolidate a spot in the finals. This weeks game against Northern Bullants at Shepley Oval should see them well positioned for an assualt on the finals. With a strong contingent of St Kilda players with senior experience, two victories in a row could see the team climb as high as fifth in the battle for positions. Should the Scorpions qualify several of the exciting young Saints players currently playing in the senior team will be available for selection.
Next Match - Round 19 Springvale v Northern, Sunday, 17th August, 2.00pm at Shepley Oval.
