PORT Adelaide coach Mark Williams has labeled his side's first half against Carlton at Telstra Dome on Saturday as "pathetic" after it set up the Blues' 66-point victory.

Williams said he was disappointed with the way the Power started, although he found some positives in his team's second half.

"We gave quite a few people opportunities and Carlton smashed us at the clearances and continued to all day. We had a pretty young side out there and the second half they kept at it, which is a small consolation, but that's all we can look forward to," he said.

"Without doubt we're dedicated to giving our players an opportunity to sink or swim and also the young players an opportunity to develop their game and understand how tough it is and how good the opposition are, and by the start of next year we hope them to be a lot better prepared for a better season.

"You don't spend too much time on this game and you get on with the next game, and that's what I've certainly focused on. There will be some players that won't be playing next week and others who will get an opportunity to show what they can do."

Williams praised the efforts of Alipate Carlile, who played on sharp-shooting Brendan Fevola. The Carlton full-forward booted four goals, with three of his majors coming in the second half.

"I thought Alipate Carlile was just brilliant on Brendan Fevola today. I thought he was outstanding for a young bloke and the amount of time that it went to that actual one-on-one [contest] and for the amount of times that he succeeded was just terrific," Williams said.

He also said it was a tough initiation for Ryan Williams, after he came in as a late replacement for the injured Travis Boak (hip flexor).

"You try and play the first game against that onslaught and it's pretty tough, so he'll be playing next week and that's how it goes," Williams said of his namesake.

"On your worst day at work, you don't want to be judged either and if everything is falling around you and the stock-market is crashing and it's pretty hard to be a stock-broker that day."

Williams said the match-up between Kane Cornes and Chris Judd finished fairly even, although the points just swung Judd's way.

"Some of the stuff that 'Juddy' was doing at the end there was just right up there wasn't it?" Williams said.

"It's interesting to look at his stat. They were very similar to Kane's, except for the fact that he had eight clearances and Kane had two, but they both kicked a goal and had the same possessions and he [Judd] had a lot of blokes working with him that kept going.

"I thought [Bryce] Gibbs was outstanding. He had eight clearances today and it'd be good if he got back to Adelaide."

On Gibbs, Williams posed the question to the media: 'Is he out of contract?'

But when Williams was told Gibbs had recently re-signed with Carlton, he quipped: "That's bad luck,  isn't it?"
