The Sydney Swans Reserves have lost their second game of the season after being beaten by premiership favourites Eastlake by 100 points on Saturday. The Swans Reserves were missing a number of players and entered the game with just 12 listed players.

Swans top-up player Bryce Addison kicked the opening goal of the game but Eastlake responded with one of their own at the five minute mark. A minute later Ryan Brabazon kicked the Swans’ second from 50 metres out, on the run, before Eastlake ended the quarter with seven unanswered goals. Eastlake forward Dean Roulstone kicked four of their eight goals for the term and at quarter time Eastlake had a 36 point lead.

Matthew O’Dwyer opened the second term with a goal for the Swans on the run from 35 metres before Eastlake kicked four in 10 minutes. The Swans responded with a goal from top-up player Stuart Newman but Eastlake ended the quarter with two goals at the 27 and 28 minute marks.

The Swans had lost Amon Buchanon halfway through the quarter with a tight calf and with Ed Barlow, who was their best player until half time, sitting out the rest of the game in case of injury in the seniors’ warm-up they went into the second half with just 10 listed players.

Again the Swans opened the scoring for the quarter with Brabazon kicking his second goal before Eastlake kicked two. Goals to top-up player Joe Britton from a snap at 25 metres and Jake Orreal and Kristin Thornton from marks 40 metres out decreased the margin slightly but Eastlake retaliated, kicking four goals in a row. At the 23 minute mark Daniel Currie goaled from a mark 50 metres out before Eastlake ended the quarter with two more goals, taking the margin to 74 points at three quarter time.

In the last quarter Eastlake kicked four goals before Currie marked and goaled from three metres on an angle. At the 17 minute mark Lewis Johnston kicked the Swans’ final goal from 45 metres out after a chain of handballs but Eastlake managed one more before the final siren.

Brabazon, Thornton and Daniel O’Keefe were the best for the Swans, along with Dan Hannebery who was their second round draft pick, from Xavier College in Victoria, at number 30 in the 2008 AFL draft. The hard-running midfielder was ranked number one for endurance at the NAB Draft Camp last year and has good skills and clean hands. This was his first game for the Swans as he is completing school in Melbourne before moving to Sydney at the end of 2009. Top-up players Matt Adamson and Ben Absulum were also good.

The Swans’ Reserves have a bye for the Easter weekend but will take on Ainslie at the SCG on Saturday 18 April at 10.50am. The game is the curtain raiser to the Swans v Carlton game.
