WESTERN Bulldogs midfielder Matthew Boyd believes the Dogs' difficult schedule for the first six rounds hasn't been ideal, but is no excuse for why they've slipped to three straight losses.

The Dogs lost to St Kilda on Sunday after a challenging run that had included two interstate trips, a game in the rain, and a Monday game that forced a short week.

However, the 26-year-old said the Bulldogs shouldn't use the fixture – and the fact they've played two top-four sides over the past fortnight – as the reason why they've fallen back into the pack.

"You want to get some momentum early in the season, but a couple of short breaks and travels are hard," he told westernbulldogs.com.au.

"But we believe we're professional enough to get on top of that type of thing, and it shouldn't affect our performances too much.

"You've just got to win games. It doesn't matter where you play or under what circumstances, you've just got to find a way to win. We're just not doing that at the moment."

Last week after their loss to Carlton, coach Rodney Eade lamented the Dogs' mistakes and ball use as the reason why they dropped the game.

Boyd said the players took a step in the right direction against the Saints but still needed to improve on some of the basics.

"It's hard to say when you're out there. It was probably a bit better, but it's still not where we want it to be," he said.

"We're still not using the ball as well as we'd like, and it's something we have to work on. Everyone has to play (against) a zone, so we've got to use the ball well."

Boyd said the late withdrawal of defender Tom Williams didn't hurt the Dogs' structure, as they had been prepared for his absence.

"We knew during the week it was going to be pretty hard for him to come up," he said.

"We've got the players down there to take those talls, but when it goes in so many times, you can't expect the backs to hold up forever.

"That's the disappointing thing, that we let it in there so often."

He said the Dogs had a few things to focus on – namely decision making and accuracy – before they confronted Adelaide next Sunday at AAMI Stadium.

"We think our intensity and our effort was pretty good today, and St Kilda are in red hot form," he said.

"Their pressure was as good as we've come across. They closed the space well and didn't give us much time to make decisions. I thought we got it inside 50 OK; we just didn't capitalise on that.

"We were good with contested ball, but we've just got to be smarter with the footy and with our positioning.

"Adelaide is coming off a loss, and we've been getting teams at bad times. This week, we've just got to find a way."
