THE AFL is yet to receive any paperwork from Essendon regarding a request to add NRL player Greg Inglis to their rookie list via the alternative talent rule.

The League wrote to the football and recruiting managers of all 17 clubs on Wednesday to inform them the Bombers had not lodged any formal request to recruit Inglis.

If the AFL receives such paperwork from the club, the normal procedure to review the application will commence.

Earlier on Wednesday, Essendon coach James Hird said the club would attempt to meet with Inglis this week regarding the possibility of the NRL star changing codes.

Hird said he was yet to speak to the 23-year-old but was interested in his renowned athletic ability.

"Sometime over the next couple of days we'll try and catch up for a chat," Hird said at the Bombers' open training session at Windy Hill.

"We'll ask him the question and if we're happy with the answer then we'll see what happens.

"He's got to make a decision whether he wants to leave NRL and then it's up in the air as to what he does."

The alternative talent rule allows clubs to offer a spot to an elite athlete from another sport who has not been registered or played in an Australian football competition for at least three years and has played in a recognised elite sporting competition.

Payments are made outside the salary cap unless the player plays senior football, with a pro-rata payment inside the cap for any game.

The signing is made in place of an additional scholarship position.
