Collingwood vice-captain Scott Pendlebury is calling for the AFL to support a money-raising proposal for flood relief funds with an All-Stars match to be played the night before the NAB Grand Final with all proceeds donated to the appeal.

Pendlebury tweeted his idea on Wednesday morning and expanded to Collingwoodfc.com.au later in the day (@sp_10).

“The AFL should put on a hall of fame tribute game with all proceeds going to the QLD floods appeal. Do it mid season! Thoughts?”

“I have spoken to many of my teammates and we all are desperate to help,” Pendlebury told Collingwoodfc.com.au.“We have all donated money to the relief but we want to do more and I think fans would really get behind the match.”

Similar to the Hall of Fame tribute match played in 2008, Pendlebury has outlined the match to be played at Etihad Stadium on Thursday 10 March with Victoria hosting the All Stars.

“A chairman of selectors could be established to pick one or two players from the teams to make up each squad.

“Assistant coaches could take the reins with Gavin Brown overseeing Victoria and Simon Goodwin coaching the All Stars.

“You can auction off a spot on the bench to watch the game, the coach’s box, and raffle off the chance to toss the coin, there are hundreds of ways to raise much-needed funds.

“There would be wide audience appeal and both radio and TV.  Companies who elect to buy advertising spot would be considered to be helping the cause with all fees from advertisements to be donated to the appeal."

The Norm Smith medallist took part in the 2008 tribute match and loved the experience of representing the state and playing alongside stars from the other 15 clubs.

“I loved every minute of the tribute match and I know my teammates enjoyed it as well.

“I am not sure how coaches and the AFL would feel about this concept but let’s have a crack and raise some serious money for a serious cause.”

Pendlebury isn't the only Magpie star to support the flood relief through twitter with Harry O'Brien and Nick Maxwell tweeting the cause.
