Fremantle has boosted its running stocks for Saturday night’s clash with Carlton at Etihad Stadium, recalling three players for what will be Paul Hasleby’s 200th game for the club.

Midfielder Rhys Palmer returns to take on the Blues, along with utility Matt de Boer and running defender Dylan Roberton.

Omitted from the team that lost to St Kilda last weekend are Byron Schammer and Zac Clarke, while Nick Suban is out with an elbow injury.

Hasleby was taken by Fremantle as a priority selection in the 1999 AFL National Draft.

He gathered a record 30 possessions on debut in round 1 of 2000 and went on to win the AFL Rising Star award that year.

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey said Hasleby, who missed the entire 2008 season with a knee injury, had “done it the hard way” in reaching the milestone.

“There’s been a lot of mental challenges along the way and that will always hold him in good stead as a person and as a player beyond football,” Harvey said.

The Freo coach said Palmer, who returned to the side in round 6 this season after a knee reconstruction in 2009, was on his way to regaining the form that saw him win the 2008 NAB Rising Star award.

“You look at guys who have had knee reconstructions, their form can always be up and down,” Harvey said.

“Getting back to the type of player you were sometimes takes time. It’ll take a little bit of time with Rhys, we understand that.”

After losing consecutive games for the first time this season, Harvey said it was important for the side to recapture its momentum heading into the mid-season break.

“It’s really important to win and to stop any rut of losing,” he said. “And particularly to win knowing that the competition is getting so close.

“You watch what happens in the second half of the year. There is going to be a logjam between Geelong, possibly St Kilda, and about 10 other teams.

“Always, moving into a break, you’d like to go in with a win rather than a loss, so it’s a big challenge for the group. Carlton’s on the rebound, so bring it on.”

But Harvey understands the difficult challenge a Carlton side that has already claimed the scalps of 2009 Grand Finalists Geelong and St Kilda this season would pose to his team.

“They’re a good running side and they’ve got a lot of availability at this particular stage,” Harvey said. “We know that when they’re at their best they’re quite dangerous.”

The match at Etihad Stadium will be Fremantle’s first of four consecutive away games at the venue.

But despite Fremantle having had limited success there in the past, Harvey said playing at Etihad Stadium didn’t pose any concerns for this year’s team, which has won two of its four NAB Cup and regular season fixtures there in 2010.

.“Now most of our players have played there so we’re familiar with it,” he said.
