In summary, his previous poor record means that his one-match sanction cannot be reduced with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of four matches suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 40 per cent and 50 points to 175 demerit points. He has an existing bad record of one match suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 10 per cent and 12.50 points to 137.50 demerit ponts. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 103.13 points and a one-match sanction.

Other Incidents Assessed:

The match day report against West Coast's Chad Fletcher for striking Nick Stevens was assessed. It was the view of the panel that the level of impact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

The match day report against St Kilda's Justin Koschitzke for striking Troy Simmonds was assessed. It was the view of the panel that the level of impact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

The match day report against the Western Bulldogs' Stephen Tiller for making front-on contact against Tadhg Kennelly was assessed. It was determined that Tiller had no realistic alternative to contest the ball. The Western Bulldogs player endeavoured to minimise contact when it was apparent that Kennelly was ducking down to pick up the ball. No further action required.

Contact between West Coast's Beau Waters and Carlton's Eddie Betts from the second quarter of Friday's match was reviewed. Waters' action was deemed to be a push in the back and not as a reportable incident. However, the panel was of the view the 50 metre penalty paid for this incident was warranted. No further action required.

Contact between Carlton's Brendan Fevola and West Coast's Adam Selwood from the fourth quarter of Friday's match was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Fevola's action was not a strike as he did not swing his arm or fist towards Selwood. The Carlton player raised his arm from the side in an attempt to hold Selwood up. The Match Review Panel then considered the action as rough conduct. It was determined the action was not unreasonable in the circumstances due to the lack of excessive force used, which was backed by the club medical report on Selwood, who sustained no injury from the contact. Although no report was made, the Panel believed that a free kick was warranted at the time.

Contact between Collingwood's Marty Clarke and Hawthorn's Simon Taylor from the third quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. Clarke, teammate Shane O'Bree and Hawthorn's Taylor converge on the ball. The the bounce favoured Taylor, who then dives out to contest the ball at the last moment, when Clarke is already committed to the contest. The Panel believed that contact was unavoidable and Clarke had no other alternative, meaning the high contact made was accidentatal. No further action was taken.

Contact between Richmond's Luke McGuane and St Kilda's Nick Riewoldt from the third quarter of Saturday's match was assessed. McGuane tackled Riewoldt when the St Kilda player was in possession on the ball. The ball spilled free during the tackling motion and it was unclear from the vision if McGuane would have seen the ball spill free. The tackle was deemed to be a single motion with McGuane holding Riewoldt at all times through the tackle. McGuane did not pick up the St Kilda player and dump him in two separate actions. No high contact was made. The action was therefore deemed not unreasonable in the circumstances. A free kick was warranted, as was paid at the time, but no further action was required by the panel.

Contact between Melbourne's Clint Bartram and Fremantle's Shaun McManus from the fourth quarter of Sunday's match was assessed. Bartram's tackle was considered to be a single motion and the momentum of both players caused them to fall forward. Bartram did not drive McManus' head into the ground and the action was not considered unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.
