In the 106 Round 3 matches Carlton has played between 1897 and 2006 they have a win / loss ratio of 69 wins for 37 losses. Of those matches played at the MCG the tally is 8 wins and 9 losses.

The greatest winning margin for Carlton in a Round 3 match came in 1977 against St. Kilda at Princes Park. The margin winning that day was 107 points. It was in that same match that Carlton achieved its highest Round 3 score of 24. 26. 170.

This brings us to Essendon, Carlton’s Round 3 opponent for 2007. Carlton has won 4 of the last 10 matches against the Bombers and in those four victories Carlton’s greatest winning margin was 33 points in Round 7 last year.

In these last 10 matches, Carlton has had two different coaches – Wayne Brittain and Denis Pagan; and four different captains, with Lance Whitnall set to be the fifth as he leads the team out this Saturday. The other players to captain Carlton against the Bombers since 2002 are;
•Andrew McKay (Round 7, 2002 and Rounds 3 & 18 in 2003)
•Adrian Hickmott (Round 22, 2002)
•Scott Camporeale (Round 4, 2004
•Anthony Koutoufides (Round 19, 2004, rounds 2 & 21 in 2005 and rounds 7 & 16 in 2006)

The Madden Cup

Introduced in 1998 the Madden Cup recognition the outstanding contributions the Madden brothers, Justin and Simon made to the Carlton and Essendon Football Clubs and the AFL.

Each year one match between Carlton and Essendon is played for the Madden Cup, the Carlton home game in odd numbered years and the Essendon home game in even numbered years. In 2006 the match was a draw and as such the Cup was retained by Carlton who had won the Madden Cup with a victory in round 2 in 2005.

Between them Justin and Simon played 710 AFL matches, played in four premierships and won six Best & Fairest Awards.

Saturday’s game in the AFL Rivalry round will be the 225th match between Carlton and Essendon in the AFL with the Blues having won 114, Essendon 106 and four matches ending in a draw.
