THE INDIGENOUS All-Stars have recaptured their winning form with an awesome display against Adelaide at TIO Stadium in Darwin on Saturday night.
The All-Stars, through Matt Campbell, Cyril Rioli, Travis Varcoe and Daniel Motlop, blitzed the Crows with a 54-point win 14.13 (97) to 6.7 (43) in tough conditions.
The fleet-footed All-Stars recorded a five goal-to one first term and never looked back. The electric Campbell was awarded the Polly Farmer Medal for his best-on-ground performance.
The Crows struggled to keep up with their explosive opponents and lacked options up forward with just six goals for the match. The performance was further marred by a potentially serious shoulder injury to defender Greg Gallman.
Speed was always going to be the All-Stars’ biggest asset and it took less than two minutes for their superior pace to show.
Territorian Campbell gathered a Jon Griffin tap and streaked past the Crows’ midfield to spot up Daniel Motlop in the goal square. The Port Adelaide forward converted to send his home crowd into a frenzy, but the Crows were quick to respond.
Youngster David Mackay and late replacement Tony Armstrong combined to set up unlikely goal kicker Rob Shirley inside 50m.
The furious pace continued as both sides battled to adjust to the now slippery conditions.
Crowd favourite Rioli set TIO Stadium alight with some trademark brilliance across half-back. The young Hawk dished a slick handball to Ash McGrath, who looked further a-field to Daniel Motlop.
The Adelaide defenders couldn’t recover in time and Motlop chipped the ball to the unmanned Burgoyne, who ran in to an open goal.
Promising young Crow Patrick Dangerfield then left the ground dazed after copping a knock to the head and the All-Stars inflicted more scoreboard pain with three quick goals.
Geelong forward Travis Varcoe showed some grunt to set up a running goal to Wonaeamirri and North Melbourne rookie Cruize Garlett provided the highlight of the term with a one-handed mark and pass to Danyle Pearce.
The Power star steadied from outside 50m and extended the margin to 25 points t the first break.
Dangerfield returned to the fray for the start of the second quarter and this time it was teammate Andy Otten’s turn to end up face down in the turf.
Daniel Motlop demonstrated some Showdown spirit to clean up the youngster, but was penalised and the Crows scored through a 50m penalty to Bernie Vince.
The All-Stars decelerated momentarily and Adelaide was able to regain some momentum. Midfielder Chris Knights missed two shots on goal, but Kurt Tippett’s aim was better and the visitors clawed back within three goals.
But some fierce pressure from number-six draft pick Chris Yarran helped trigger an All-Stars resurgence. Yarran brought down Michael Doughty across half-back and set up another goal to Motlop.
Rioli got involved again just before the main break and the result was another goal, this time to Varcoe, which increased the All-Star lead to 23 points.
The rain set in for the start of the third term, but the Indigenous stars continued to fire with three goals to one.
The impressive Campbell stole the ball out of the centre square and pinpointed Wonaeamirri, who proved far too quick for Nathan Bock.
The Demon small forward slotted his second major and a free kick inside 50m to Tippett was Adelaide’s only respite. He kicked his second, but some undisciplined play from Knights undid the hard work.
The young left-footer gave away consecutive 50m, which gifted a goal to Andrew Lovett and helped extend the lead to 39 points at the main break.
The All-Stars continued to dominate across the ground and another four goals to Campbell, Varcoe, Thomas and Motlop put the result beyond doubt.
