Boyd is one of six players (Daniel Giansiracusa, Adam Cooney, Daniel Cross, Shaun Higgins and Robert Murphy are the others) who have been shortlisted for the position.
The new skipper will be announced on Friday morning at the Whitten Oval.
"To be honest, there’s probably three guys in Giansiracusa, Boyd and Cooney who could all get the job," Johnson told afl.com.au. "But I’ll go out on a limb and I’ll say ‘Boydy’."
Johnson took over from Luke Darcy as captain back in 2005 and held the role until he retired at the end of last season.
He says during that time he was continually impressed by Boyd’s worth ethic and popularity among the playing group.
"I think Boydy is a great story, because he came off the rookie list," Johnson said.
"He was playing in the Frankston reserves a few years ago and now he could possibly be the captain of our club.
"But he's just developed over time. He takes the leadership side of the game very seriously and he wants to develop himself as much as possible.
"He's always asked myself over the last couple of years about ways to improve and he’s thrown a lot of ideas forward about how the team could be better.
"Most importantly, though, his drive is all for the group. Everything he does is for the betterment of the group and he just wants to bring everyone along so they can be as good as they can.
"There’s no doubt ‘Gia’ is the same. He works extremely hard and has got that real passion to not only lead but to also instruct and guide a lot of the young players."
With Boyd and Giansiracusa both turning 29 this year, there is a chance the Bulldogs might turn to 25-year-old Cooney, who, according to Johnson, is the most talented member of the club’s squad.
"He’s got that bit of larrikin about him, which the boys enjoy," Johnson said.
"But he’s also starting to develop a bit of seriousness about himself.
"The thing about ‘Coons’ is that he only joined the leadership group last year and whether the club sees that he’s ready for a bigger role is up to them."
